It’s now up to twelve U.S. Senators calling for Menendez’s resignation:
Senators John Fetterman (D. PA), Pete Welch (D. VT) & Sherrod Brown (D. OH) have already called for Menendez’s resignation.
UPDATE:
Sen. Cory Booker (D. NJ) calls for Menendez’s resignation:
Senator Cory Booker called on Senator Robert Menendez, his fellow New Jersey Democrat, to resign Tuesday morning, ending days of silence after Mr. Menendez was indicted on bribery charges.
As New Jersey’s junior senator, Mr. Booker often has described Mr. Menendez, the senior senator, as a friend, ally and mentor. His decision to condemn Mr. Menendez, and to join the growing chorus of state and federal officials calling on him to step down, demonstrates the deepening crisis facing a senator who until last week had occupied one of the most powerful and secure positions in American politics.
“The details of the allegations against Senator Menendez are of such a nature that the faith and trust of New Jerseyans as well as those he must work with in order to be effective have been shaken to the core,” Mr. Booker said, adding: “I believe stepping down is best for those Senator Menendez has spent his life serving.”
The calls are growing:
No Tweet from her yet, but add U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D. NV) to the list:
U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nevada, has joined the growing chorus of voices calling for her colleague Sen. Bob Menendez to resign.
Rosen issued a statement Tuesday saying the allegations against Menendez, the senior U.S. senator from New Jersey and a fellow Democrat, are well-documented and "a violation of the public trust."
"While he is entitled to due process and a fair trial, this is a distraction that undermines the bipartisan work we need to do in the Senate for the American people," Rosen said.
That’s seven Democratic Senators to call for Menendez’s resignation. Also, another big name came out for him to leave:
House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi on Monday said Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) should resign, adding the weight of one of Washington’s most prominent Democrats to the lengthening list of party members urging the embattled New Jersey senator to leave office.
“It probably would be a good idea if he did resign,” Pelosi told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki, reasoning that Rep. George Santos’ (R-N.Y.) ongoing federal indictment also demands resignation.
Pelosi said that that public skepticism around the government and what she described as governance issues within the Republican Party further merit Menendez’s resignation. At least a dozen House Democrats and three Senate Democrats have also issued similar sentiments about Menendez’s political future — including the bulk of party members from his home state.
Meanwhile, Rep. Andy Kim (D. NJ) is making a hell of case why he should be the next Senator from New Jersey:
